Effects of Hazardous Chemical Clothing for Your Newborn

Every parent should know that their newborns’ health does not only depend on good quality food, but you also have to get save clothes for their sensitive bodies as it plays a great role in their health and growth. The clothes available for the newborns these days contain a lot of chemicals, which leads to myriad hazardous effects. The newborns are already vulnerable to such chemicals. Below are few of the chemicals mostly present on the baby’s clothes.

Phthalates are a chemical group generally used to soften PVC (the plastic polyvinyl chloride). In the fabric industry, they are used in synthetic leather, rubber, and PVC, and in some dyes. There are considerable points about the toxicity of phthalates such as DEHP, which is reprotoxic in mammals, as it can affect with development of the testes in early life.

Antimony used in fabrics during the production process is released into the environment. It is a carcinogen and harmful to the heart, lungs, liver, and skin. Long term gasp causes chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs)

Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) are synthetic chemicals that are widely used as a wetting agent by textiles manufacturers. Once released to the environment, NPEs reduce to nonylphenols (NP), which are known to be lethal and act as hormone disrupters. They are known to accumulate in many living organisms.

Why are the Newborns More Vulnerable to these Chemicals?

Factors like size, metabolism, and behavior can make the newborns more vulnerable to some hazardous chemicals.

  1. Food, liquid, and air intake are higher relative to their body weight, and gastrointestinal absorption is increased in infants, which leads to the increase of chemical absorption.
  2. The blood-brain barrier, which confines the penetration of chemicals from the blood to the brain, changes gradually, resulting in potentially higher exposure of the fetal and infant brain to particular chemicals present in the blood.
  3. There are huge storage and distribution of specific chemicals in the newborn’s organs.

Significance of Good Quality Clothes for the Newborns

The good quality infant clothes remain soft in touch against the sensitive skin of the infants and keep them protected from all the hazards. They become more playful and sleep well.
